There's not much practical difference between an organisation like that and a single self-publishing author (or a handful of them). This is not necessarily applicable to publishers that are so tiny and specialised that they are basically a one-person show. There are some people who boycott particular publishers for political reasons I find their arguments largely unconvincing. It would be ridiculous for me to randomly pick a Tor book and expect to like it.) Tor is huge and publishes lots of authors that I like, but also lots of authors whose writing I can't stand. So I wouldn't dismiss a Baen book just because it's Baen. Baen has a reputation for publishing right-leaning MilSF, which I mostly don't find interesting, but they also publish Bujold's Vorkosigan series, which I love. Even smaller independent publishers publish multiple authors (dis)liking one book from a particular publisher is a poor predictor of (dis)liking others. I would never base my decision to buy or not buy a book purely on the publisher. Other than that, they're transparent to me. I'm aware of which publishers offer DRM-free ebooks.
